The Pinion gearbox for bikes: an alternative to the derailleur
Unlike a traditional transmission, a Pinion gearbox integrates all the gears inside a casing located at the bottom bracket. Gear shifting no longer occurs at the rear wheel: the transmission to the wheel is ensured by a chain or a belt, while the gears are protected within the box.
This architecture offers several advantages: the sensitive parts of the transmission are protected from shocks and dirt, the masses are better centred on the bike and the wear of the rear transmission is significantly reduced. It also allows for gear changes when stationary or at low speed, depending on the model and the control system. For a utility or cargo bike, used daily and sometimes heavily loaded, this is particularly interesting.
The downside is a weight greater than that of a traditional transmission, a higher price and an integration that requires a frame specifically designed to accommodate the box — or an adapter in the case of a conversion. The pedalling feel and efficiency may also differ from those of a traditional transmission.
In terms of maintenance, the Pinion box is relatively simple: a periodic oil change is generally sufficient, with intervals that vary depending on the model and the manufacturer's recommendations. There is no cassette or derailleur to maintain at the rear.
Several interfaces and mounting brackets exist depending on the generations and models of Pinion boxes. The boxes intended for muscle bikes and those designed for electric assist bikes are not necessarily interchangeable. The choice of bracket therefore depends on the exact model of Pinion, the frame and the configuration of the transmission.
In summary: Pinion prioritises robustness, protection and longevity over lightness and ease of integration. A particularly appealing solution for touring, utility and cargo bikes, but which requires specific frame design or adaptation.
